Paring Down, Staying Sane: Five Ways to Let Go More Easily

If you’ve read the other articles in this series, you know that I put a lot of emphasis on letting things go. Letting go of the denial that we are doing things that we are actually just pretending to do right now. Letting go of tasks and projects… by choosing to focus on doing a few things well rather than many things badly. Letting go of the idea that everything must be done now, and accepting that we will do some things later instead. Letting go of the expectation that we can do everything, or that we should.

Remember these ideas if you are struggling with letting things go:

  • Less can be more. Doing more focused work on fewer things at a time forces you to choose what is most important at a given time and devote full attention to it… enough to get it all the way and completely done. Your alternative is the illusion of doing more with the reality of doing less still. Honesty about your priorities is better.
  • Choosing not to do things is actually choosing to do something else. Remind yourself of what you are choosing and why that’s worth it to you. That’s the reason you are letting other things go for now.
  • No choice is irrevocable. These decisions are not binding. If you make a choice about what to let go and find it isn’t working, you can always re-prioritize. Try letting go and see what it’s like!
  • You are enough just as you are. You do not need to do anything or lots of things to be enough. You are enough already.
